Ferdinand Magellan was born around 1480. His parents were members of an upper class society. Magellan an older sister named Isabel and a brother named Diogo. In a few years his mom had 2 more kids. When he was 10 both of his parents died. When he was 12 he became the queens' page.
Exploration
Magellan first time at sea was in I505. He was 25 years old at that time.He sailed Francisco de Almedia. In 1511 Magellan went on an expodition to beat Melaka.He had also sailed to the Spices Islands. Which is also known as the Moluccas Islands. Francisco Serrao had sent letters to Magellan. The letters that Serrao had sent helped build in Magellan's mind the location of the Spice Islands. Magellan asked the King of Pourgual to help with his journy but then he refused. Next Magellan had asked the King of Spain to help and he said yes. For Magellan it was going to be hard to find very good sailors. In September 1519 Magellan then had and set sail for southern Spain with five ships. The five ships were called the Santiago, the San Antonio, the Conception, the Trinidad, and the Victoria. Things did go so well on the ships. The crew tried to throw him overboard because they thought they were lost. so every crew member that turned agianst him Magellan had them hanged. Then they came to an ocean andd Magellan called it the Pacific Ocean. Then they sailed for weeks without any sign of land. The drinking water the ships had were awful, they were slimy. His crew had to eat rats. Then his crew had sufferd from scury. Scurvy was an affect that you caught if you didn't have enough Vitamin C. There gums would turn black then there teeth would fall out. Next they would start to bleed.
The End
Magellan was killed in a war in the Philippine islands. His crew faced a group of natives who killed Magellan with a poisoned arrow in his foot and a spear through his heart. After Magellan died, his crew burned his ship. Only 3 ships remained. Magellan's body was left behind. Only two ships actually reached the Spice Islands because the Santiago was sunk in a storm. Magellan's crew loaded both ships with a rich cargo and headed for Spain. On the way home, the Portuguese who had claimed the Spice Islands captured the Trinidad. The Victoria was the only ship to make it safely back to Spain. Out of the five ships that began the journey, only one ship made the voyage around the world. Out of 250 men, only 18 survived. He was not one of them.
